Bournville Junior School
Chairman Of Governors' Introduction
I am very proud and privileged to have been elected Chairman of the Governors of Bournville School. This followed in a family tradition. Dame Elizabeth Cadbury, the Founder of the school with her husband George (my husband Robin's Grandparents) was Chairman of the Managers, as they were called until about thirty year ago, from 1906~1952. Joyce Cadbury, married to her son Laurence, followed in 1952~1981. I took over from her in 1981. This could be a record, only three Chairman of Governors in one hundred years.
The Governing Body likes to think of itself as supporters, encouragers and critical friends of the School. We have a very strong, loyal membership covering most skills needed of Governors in the 21st century- lawyers, accountants, IT specialists, industrials, pastoral carers and more. We have no difficulty recruiting new Governors for our school.
I have experienced the changing role of a Governor and the many responsibilities added every year, particularly in the last ten years. Governors meetings are well planned, well attended, not drawn out and have some amusing moments too, which keeps everyone on their toes.
I find it a most interesting and rewarding role, and I love following the development of the children, the new opportunities they are given to broaden their education and the methods of teaching them.
